A loft or balcony glass railing is a guard of tempered glass panels along the edge of a loft, landing or interior balcony. It does the same job as spindles or a half wall and lets you see straight through to the room below, so the upstairs does not feel boxed in. It is for homeowners with an open loft and for builders finishing one.
Star Glass LLC measures the edge, has the panels made and installs them with standoffs or posts in the finish you pick. It is part of our glass railing work across northern and central New Jersey.
Standoff and post-mounted railings
Standoff railings bolt the glass to the face of the floor edge with round metal pins, so nothing sits on top of the floor and the glass seems to float. Post-mounted railings use short posts that clamp the glass between them. Standoffs look cleanest. Posts work where the floor edge cannot take side-mounted hardware. We look at how your floor is built and tell you which one it can carry.
- Standoff-mounted glass panels
- Post-mounted glass panels
- Optional top handrail in wood or metal
Height, code and safety
Guards are a safety item and the height and the gaps are set by building requirements for your town. We confirm what applies to your loft during the visit and make the glass to it. The glass is tempered and sized for the span so it does not flex.
Running the glass down the stairs
Many lofts open onto a staircase, and the glass can run down the stairs as a glass stair railing so the whole run matches. We measure both at the same visit.
What sets the price
The length of the edge, the number of panels and corners, standoff versus post mounting, and an optional top rail. A straight loft edge is one of the simpler railing jobs we do. We give you a firm price after we measure.
