Glass stair railings in New Jersey

Glass panels cut to the angle of your staircase, so the stairs stop being a wall in the house.

Glass stair railing on a staircase with open treads

A glass stair railing replaces spindles or a half wall beside a staircase with clear tempered panels cut to the slope of the stairs. It is for homeowners who want light and sight lines through the middle of the house, and it works on standard, open-tread and floating stairs.

Star Glass LLC is a glass railing contractor serving northern and central New Jersey. We measure on site, have each panel cut to your stair and install it. The same glass can continue along the landing as a loft or balcony railing.

Glass on open-tread and floating stairs

We have installed glass railings beside open and floating wood treads. These stairs have no riser behind the step, so the railing has to be anchored carefully and the glass has to follow the slope of the stair exactly.

Each panel is cut to the angle of your staircase. That is why we measure in person rather than from a drawing.

Replacing a wood or metal railing

Most jobs start with an existing wood or metal railing that blocks the view or feels dated. Glass can replace a solid half wall, a row of spindles, or a plain handrail on a landing. It also works on a loft or balcony edge, where you want a guard without hiding the room below.

  • Glass guards along lofts and balconies

Standoff or post-mounted on a staircase

Standoff glass is bolted to the side of the stringer or treads and looks like it floats. Post-mounted glass sits between short posts on top of the treads. Which one your stair can take depends on how it is framed, and we tell you at the visit. A top handrail in wood or metal is optional on most lofts. Stairs generally need one, and we confirm what your town requires.

What to send before we visit

A photo of the staircase from the bottom and from the top is enough to start. Tell us if the stairs are open-tread, if you are keeping an existing handrail, and where the railing will end. We go over glass and hardware options when we visit.

Railings are a safety item, so the height and the spacing have to meet building requirements for your town. We confirm what applies to your stairs during the visit.

One crew for the glass and the install

We take the measurements, have the glass made to fit, and install it. One crew handles the whole job, so you are not coordinating a glass supplier and a separate installer.

Questions about this work

Do you install glass railings on open-tread stairs?

Yes. Star Glass has installed glass railings beside open and floating wood treads. The glass is cut to the slope of the stair and anchored to the framing, which is why we measure in person.

Can I keep my existing wood handrail with a glass railing?

Sometimes. Tell us what you have and send a photo. We check how the handrail is attached when we visit and tell you if it can stay or needs a new mount.

Do glass stair railings have to meet code?

Yes. Railing height, handrail height and gap spacing are set by building requirements, and the glass must be tempered or laminated safety glass. We confirm what applies to your stairs before the glass is made.

How much does a glass stair railing cost?

The price depends on the length of the staircase, the number of panels and turns, standoff or post mounting, and an optional handrail. Star Glass gives you a firm price after measuring in your home.

How long does a glass stair railing take?

We measure first, the panels are cut to your staircase, and we come back to install them. We give you the timeline at the estimate visit. Installing the railing itself usually fits in a single visit.

How do I get a quote for a glass stair railing?

Send the quote form with a photo of the stairs from the top and the bottom, or call during phone hours. We serve northern and central New Jersey, and the estimate is free.
