Glass railings in New Jersey

Clear glass panels for stairs, lofts and balconies, measured to your home and installed by our crew.

Glass stair railing beside floating wood treads

A glass railing replaces spindles and solid half walls with clear tempered panels, so light and sight lines carry through the house. It is for homeowners who want to open up a staircase, loft or balcony, and for builders who need a licensed railing installer. Star Glass LLC is a licensed New Jersey glass contractor, and we measure, order and install the glass ourselves.

Our main railing service is glass stair railings, including open-tread and floating stairs. We also fit loft and balcony glass railings in homes across northern and central New Jersey.

Standoff and post-mounted glass

With standoff mounting, bolts hold the glass off the side of the stair or floor edge, so it looks like it is floating and nothing blocks the view. With post-mounted glass, panels sit between posts. Both are common. Which one is right depends on the stair, its framing and where the railing ends.

We look at your stairs and tell you what will hold up. Not every stair can take both styles, and we would rather say so at the visit than after the glass is made.

New Jersey building rules for glass railings

In New Jersey, building rules follow the International Residential Code. Guards are generally at least 36 inches high, a stair handrail sits 34 to 38 inches above the nosings, and a 4-inch sphere must not pass through any opening. Railing glass must be tempered or laminated safety glass with a permanent label.

Local building departments can add their own requirements, so we confirm what applies to your stairs before the glass is made.

What sets the price of a glass railing

The length of the run, the number of panels and angles, standoff versus post mounting, and an optional top handrail. A straight loft edge is simpler than a staircase with turns and landings. We give you a firm price after we measure.

What to send before we visit

A photo of the staircase from the bottom and from the top is enough to start. Tell us if the stairs are open-tread, if you want to keep a handrail and where the railing will stop. Use the quote form or call and we set up the visit.

Questions about this work

Do you install glass railings on stairs and balconies?

Yes. Star Glass installs glass railings on staircases, including open-tread and floating stairs, and along lofts, landings and interior balconies in homes across northern and central New Jersey.

What is the difference between standoff and post-mounted glass railings?

Standoff glass is bolted off the side of the stair with nothing underneath, so it appears to float. Post-mounted glass sits between posts. The right choice depends on how your stair or floor edge is built.

Does railing glass need to meet code?

Yes. Railing glass must be tempered or laminated safety glass, and the height and spacing must meet the building rules for your town. Star Glass confirms what applies before the glass is made.

How much does a glass railing cost?

The price depends on the length of the run, the number of panels and angles, the mounting style and an optional handrail. Star Glass gives you a firm price after measuring in your home.

Is Star Glass a licensed railing installer?

Yes. Star Glass LLC is a licensed New Jersey home improvement contractor, license number 13VH13775400. We install glass railings for homeowners and for builders.

How do I get a quote for a glass railing?

Send the quote form with a photo of the stairs from the top and from the bottom, or call during phone hours. We come to your home, measure and give you a price. The estimate is free.
